Anubis, god of the dead is represented as a jackal-headed god, or simply as a full jackal. Jackals are dog-like scavengers that wander through the arid regions, always in search of meal opportunities. Anubis resided over embalments, and after the funeral, he would lead the deceased by the hand and introduce him into the presence of the judges where the soul of the deceased would be judged. Anubis was the guardian of offerings brought to the ceremony, and also guarded the mummy from evil forces in the night. Jackals were known to wander around the Necropolis (city of the dead) at night, thus giving birth to the origin of Anubis-god of the dead. The name "Anubis" is the Greek rendering of the Egyptian "Anpu".
