Posted 1/13/2007 1:34:35 AM | | | | I was told that if I don't want to do nude scenes or do alot of swearing scenes if any, I could ruin my chances of being an successful actress. Is this true? I really do want to do all kinds of movies and play all kinds of characters and parts, and I am really good to get along with. But these two things, I am not really comfortable doing. Especially nude scenes. Plus, can your agent make you do these kinds of scenes? As well, do they decide the way that you dress and where you go? I am hearing all these things and it makes it sound like you have little freedom as an actress. I really want to make acting my career because I love the art of it and the imagination of it but I don't want to go into something where I have to feel like I have little say. I believe in making sacrifices, but I don't believe in going against who you are. If someone could please help me understand how the acting buisness works and if these things are true, and how I can prepare myself before getting in to it, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for you time. |

I was told that if I don't want to do nude scenes or do allot of swearing scenes if any, I could ruin my chances of being an successful actress EFM: You do not have to do nude scenes. You have say in what you do at all times. You are the manager of your career. Swearing however is in our entertainment but again, if you cannot relate to the character you are playing or feel uncomfortable, do not do it. It will not ruin your chances to not do nude, if you are a dedicated talented actress/model and have your materials and prepared then you have the capabilities to to get the jobs and projects. THere are some projects that require nudity that are legit but they are few and far between. There are many people out there that insist you must pose nude or do films with extreme nudity. A lot of them may be perverts and scam artists. Some may say you have to do nude. This is generally a ploy to get you to take it off. I really do want to do all kinds of movies and play all kinds of characters and parts, and I am really good to get along with. EFM: How many plays and theater productions have nude actors on stage? Review the film and television industry. How many people are nude in the sitcoms, movies and television commercials that are viewed by the public. Be funny if in The King of Queens, Doug and Carrie were nude and Arthur steps out of his basement naked as a Jay Bird... lol we are not Europe where that thing is more the norm. There is a market for nude in all genres but that is your decision as to pursue those projects and if you do, you have to be VERY DILIGENT to spot the scams and perverts. They are prevalent in this area. Plus, can your agent make you do these kinds of scenes? EFM: You are the manager of your career. You decide what projects to accept ultimately. As well, do they decide the way that you dress and where you go? Agents do tell you about auditions and casting calls as well as tell you the part/role and suggested type of dress. That is standard. But again, you are the manager of your career and you do what you think is best. I am hearing all these things and it makes it sound like you have little freedom as an actress. An actress is only part of a equation for a film project, there are all the other actors and crew, all of you work together with the director to fulfill a look and feel. All must follow the directors directions.. that is about the extent of losing your freedom. Everyone works together as a whole. I really want to make acting my career because I love the art of it and the imagination of it but I don't want to go into something where I have to feel like I have little say. EFM: You are the manager of your career... I believe in making sacrifices, but I don't believe in going against who you are. If someone could please help me understand how the acting business works and if these things are true, and how I can prepare myself before getting in to it, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for you time. EFM: Lastly, my suggestion to you would be to learn as much about the field as possible, there are a number of books published on all aspects of the field. We have books on the EEM web site and you can also go to the bookstore and library. READ and KNOW. http://www.extrasformovies.com/books_modeling_acting.asp Link to books on EFM web site... As a manager of your career, know everything about the field as possible so you are guarded against anything detrimental. This career you are choosing is like any other career, you have to prepare, educate yourself and have your materials together for the job interview or in your case audition or casting call. Never do anything that you feel uncomfortable with or that your gut tells you something is not right.

| Posted 1/13/2007 12:19:59 PM | | | | Hey don't stress it!!! I am 100% with you, I have a wonderful relationship w/my Lord and Savior and as a person with strong beliefs, I also would not do nude or cursing in anything. You are not a slave, you can dictate what you are willing to do and not do. Does this mean you might miss out on an opportunity, sure it does, but there are tons of opportunities out there! Better to miss a role that would comprimise who YOU ARE, then to take it and feel guilty and sick about it later!!! You are auditioning for a JOB. This is just like any other job in that you are being hired for your talents and abilities. However, just like any job, you may not ever put an application in to a place that makes X rated magazines, or a company that does something you don't believe in or like. Same goes for acting. You tell your agent what you WON'T do, and his job is to find you work that stays within the boundaries you set. If he/she won't do that, then find a new agent!! There are so many films, T.V. series that NEVER have nude or cursing in them. Plays and theater, also, have many, many roles available that will never compromise you. Stick to your guns, we are talking about your life! Don't settle for less than your expectations and don't go beyond your restrictions. You wouldn't deal drugs or prostitute yourself, right? Well this is the same thing. The difference is, this industry does have a lot of legal actions that simulate what you don't want to do. Avoid these, YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO NUDE, SIMULATED SEX, CURSE, or anything else you don't want to do TO BE SUCCESSFUL! Tell your agent, take control of your destiny! Recognize there is alot of different opinions and views (as is life), but the only that matters, is yours, to yourself. I don't mean of course, that you go around telling everybody your views, and they alone are right ! I just mean, that only you will have to live with the consequences of the actions you take. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF THINGS: You are not alone! Many, many, many actresses/actors feel the same way, and you won't ever find them in something that compromises their beliefs. Yes, they miss out on some roles, but that doesn't phase them, because there are soooo many roles out there that they will win, and love doing them, and feel good about it, and get paid! I hope this helps, this is just mho. But, it is also my experience. Read everyones advice and take what fits for you. Be strong. Know what you may be up aganist. If it overwhelms you, then this may not be the business for you. If you are strong enough, you will do well. Walk with your head high and your eyes on your goal, just be aware that others may have a different point of view, and don't place yourself above them. DO write out the list of things you won't do and give them to your agent. Many Blessings and wishes of Success to you! misty

| Posted 1/13/2007 4:13:14 PM | | | | Swearing and nude scenes....Yes....you could be limiting yourself to roles. Not so much with the nudie stuff but with the swearing thing, definitely. One thing you need to realize is that you are an actress starting out. Alot of starter roles you will land are Indies. Alot of Indies have nudity and swearing, I actually had one interested in my son a few months ago that I declined because he wanted him in a shower and underwear scene. I was like, "No way!", then he even told me that he would change the script so that he wouldn't have to do those scenes. I just politely declined... You are the only one who can set your boundaries in this industry. If you start out with nudie films, it will be hard to get out of, plus, you could be comprimising yourself if that "Star" opportunity happens to come your way. If you have an agent that is telliing you you have to go in these types of productions, tell him/her to "take a hike!", no one can dictate your career path for you. Also be aware that there can be jobs that require "nude" but it is "artistic" nude. You have to get the low-down nitty gritty in this type of situation because sometimes, the "nude" doesn't even show anything. It may be the curve of your back alllll the way down or something. Get the specifics! What type of contract did you sign with your agent? If it is an exclusive contract, they can NOT book you anything until your contract expires if you decline a bunch of roles that they submit you for. You can't even take ANY self found projects, or sign with a different agent in that time. An agent doesn't tell you what to wear, that is more a managers job. New talent DON'T need managers, it would just be an unneeded expense. You choose your own path. But also know this. Success sometimes takes sacrifice! Not only in acting but in everyday life as well. You have to keep your eye on the prize and NOT let anything deter you.

| Posted 1/13/2007 4:42:09 PM | | | | Misty, Thanks for the great advice. It actually makes me feel better now about the whole thing. I too am a christian and I pray everyday that God will help me to be successful, but find the roles that is not against who I am. Again, thanks. And I wish you all the best as well. |
| Posted 1/13/2007 4:44:37 PM | | | | Sarah, thank you for the advice. I understand where you said that we need to make sacrifices, and that's true. But to go against who you really are, well that's not needed. Thanks again and I wish you all the best in the future. |
